The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy is inching closer to its finale. India have already sealed their berth in the final, slated to be hosted at the Dubai International Stadium on Mar 9. They defeated Australia by four wickets in a highly anticipated knockout clash. The Men in Blue will face New Zealand in the final.

Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson struck commanding centuries as New Zealand hammered South Africa by 50 runs in a high-scoring semifinal in Lahore on Wednesday.

Daryl Mitchell (49 off 37 balls), Glenn Phillips (49 not out off 27 balls) and Michael Bracewell (16 off 12 balls) then capitalized on the solid foundation, adding 112 runs in the final 10 overs to power New Zealand to a massive total of 362/6 —the highest score in Champions Trophy history.

Only twice has a higher target been successfully chased in ODIs — both by South Africa — but this time it was not to be as the Proteas were restricted to 312 for 9 in pursuit of the record target, despite a scintillating century from David Miller and fighting fifties by Rassie van der Dussen and skipper Temba Bavuma.

Santner (3/43) was the most successful New Zealand bowler, as he, along with Michael Bracewell (1/53), Glenn Phillips (2/27) and Ravindra (1/20), tightened the screws in the middle overs.

India have been unbeaten so far in this Champions Trophy. Placed in Group A, the Rohit Sharma-led side comfortably beat Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand in the league stage. The Black Caps finished at the second spot to set up the knockout clash against Group B toppers, South Africa. The Proteas won two of their three matches. Their second game against Australia was washed out due to incessant rain in Rawalpindi.

ICC Champions Trophy History

The Champions Trophy was introduced in 1998 as the ICC Knockout Tournament. It was initially organised to fund the non-Test nations, but later, major countries also started hosting it. Since 2009, the top eight teams from the preceding edition of the ODI World Cup have been competing at the multi-lateral event.

The previous edition of the ICC Champions Trophy was hosted by England in 2017, with Pakistan emerging as the winners. Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs to clinch the trophy.

The 50-over competition was discontinued to streamline the other ICC event. In 2021, the cricket governing body announced the return of the Champions Trophy. The next edition, scheduled for 2029, will be hosted by India.

South Africa were the winners of the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998. India remains one of the most successful teams in history, having secured the title twice. They became joint champions with Sri Lanka in 2002 before defeating England in the 2013 final. Australia have also won the Champions Trophy in two consecutive editions in 2006 and 2009.
