India's hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 have been reduced to a complicated equation following their 1-3 defeat to the Netherlands on Saturday. However, Argentina's 3-1 win over England later in the day kept Craig Fulton's side mathematically alive.

The Netherlands have already secured their place in the last four with six points. England and Argentina have three points each, while India remain without a point in Pool E.

India have scored three goals and conceded seven so far, leaving them with a goal difference of -4.

With India set to face Argentina in their final Pool E match on Monday, the team need not only a victory but also a favourable result in the Netherlands vs England clash.

What India Need To Do

The first requirement is straightforward: India must beat Argentina.

However, a narrow victory is unlikely to be enough for the Harmanpreet Singh-led side. India ideally need to win by at least two goals to improve their goal difference and strengthen their chances of finishing above their rivals.

That, however, will not be easy. Argentina have already beaten India twice in the FIH Pro League this year, winning 8-0 and 4-2 in the two matches played in Rourkela.

India, therefore, will not only need to win but will also have to produce one of their best performances of the tournament.

What Else Needs To Go India's Way?

India also need the Netherlands to beat England, with a Dutch victory by three or more goals representing the clearest route to the semi-finals.

For example, if India beat Argentina 3-1 and the Netherlands beat England 3-0, India would finish ahead of England on goal difference, while Argentina would be eliminated. The Netherlands would top Pool E with nine points and India would finish second to qualify for the semi-finals.

Other combinations, however, could leave India and England level on goal difference and goals scored, bringing additional tie-breakers into play.

If India beat Argentina 3-1 and England lose 1-3 to the Netherlands, both teams would have scored and conceded the same number of goals. In that scenario, the next tie-breaker could become relevant.

India have scored one field goal in the pool, through Dilpreet Singh against England, while England have scored three field goals, all in their 4-2 win over India.

The Simple Equation For India

For Fulton's team, the easiest scenario is therefore clear:

India need to beat Argentina by at least two goals and hope that the Netherlands beat England by at least three goals.

That combination would give India a clear advantage on goal difference and avoid the more complicated tie-break scenarios involving goals scored and field goals.

India's task is already difficult, but they at least know what they have to do. The bigger problem is that their semi-final fate is no longer entirely in their own hands.

The first part of the equation will be up to Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates against Argentina. After that, they will have to hope the Dutch do them a favour against England.

Another problem for India would be that England will face the Netherlands at 10:30 p.m. IST on Monday, after India's 6:30 p.m. clash against Argentina. This gives England the advantage of knowing exactly what result they need to qualify, provided India beat Argentina and knock them out of the tournament.
