Boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will have yet another faceoff, a professional rematch-on Sept. 19 later this year. The bout will be streamed globally on Netflix, and the match will be the first-ever boxing event to be held at 'Sphere', the immersive event venue east of the Las Vegas strip.

The bout is huge and significant, given the fact that 49-year-old Mayweather will come out of his nine-year retirement from competitive boxing. He has announced his intention to enter the squared circle again. Pacquiao, now 47, had already announced an end to his four-year retirement from competitive boxing last year. He is scheduled to fight his first bout against Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18.

While the fighters, as well as the promoters, have announced that the bout will take place on Sept. 19, there has been no announcement on a weight class or length for their second bout. Mayweather and Pacquiao have been the most prolific boxers of their generation, and have already fought once, back in May 2015.

Mayweather won the fight by a unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 116–112 and the other 118–110. It did not live up to the hype preceding it though, even as promoters claimed it was still the most profitable fight in history. Following that fight, Pacquiao revealed that he fought with an injured shoulder. He said he did not want to postpone such an important event. Pacquiao said he was not able to apply his usual offensive pressure to Mayweather back then.

Now what?

In a statement, Mayweather has said that the result will be the same this time around as well: "I already fought and beat Manny once." Mayweather is still unbeaten, and Pacquiao is confident he would hand Mayweather his first professional loss.

"The fans have waited long enough; they deserve this match," Pacquiao, whose record stands at 62-8-3 with 39 knockouts, said. "I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him."

Fight of the Century

The first time these two icons of the ring met, it happened after a decade of fans clamouring for a matchup. Both sides blamed one another for the delay, but Mayweather always asserted he would fight whoever he wanted and whenever he wanted. Mayweather's approach led many fans to believe that he waited to accept the bout until he felt age had taken a bit of sting out of Pacquiao's vicious punches.

While the fight was billed as the 'Fight of the Century' and 'Battle for Greatness', it did not live up to the expectations.

Mayweather had retired in 2017, with a 50-0 record, and has since spent time competing in lucrative boxing "exhibitions" against YouTubers and fringe competitors. He is currently in multiple legal disputes. Pacquiao, meanwhile, ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the Philippines, his native country.

He also lost in the senate election of the country, and then just two months after the setback, he returned to the ring. He fought the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a majority draw while trying to become the oldest 147-pound champion.
