Passion by itself isn't enough to succeed in business, according to Harsh Mariwala.

The founder chairman of Marico Ltd.—the consumer goods maker whose flagship products comprise Parachute coconut oil and Saffola cooking oil—talks about his favourite books on management and sums up key lessons from them.

1. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, By Angela Duckworth

This book, Mariwala said, deals with how important it is to have passion along with perseverance and determination for success.

2. Execution: The Discipline Of Getting Things Done, By Larry Bossidy And Ram Charan

The book, according to Mariwala, dwells on how hard work and execution are as important as strategy and thinking.

3. Firms Of Endearment, How World-Class Companies Profit From Passion And Purpose, By Raj Sisodia, Jagdish Sheth And David B Wolfe

The business lesson from this book, Mariwala said, is the purpose of an organisation that focuses on not just profits and shareholders but is accountable to all stakeholders.

4. Blue Ocean Strategy, How To Create Uncontested Market Space And Make Competition Irrelevant, By Renée Mauborgne And W Chan Kim

This book talks about “creating the right to win”, said Mariwala.
