(Bloomberg) -- Former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir will stand trial on charges related to the 1989 coup that brought him to power as well as a crackdown on the protests that eventually led to his ouster, the General Attorney said.
Investigations into the 76-year-old former ruler's actions have been completed and the case referred to court, authorities said Tuesday in a statement. Sudan, which has reported 14 cases of the coronavirus including two deaths, will wait until the outbreak is over before proceeding with the trial.
Bashir, who was sentenced to two years in a rehabilitation facility in December for illicit possession of foreign currencies, was overthrown by Sudan's army in April 2019 after months of deadly protests. He's also wanted by the International Criminal Court for his alleged role in war crimes in the western region of Darfur.
