Bharatiya Janata Party leader and two-time Member of Parliament, Om Birla, was on Tuesday named the National Democratic Alliance's nominee for the Lok Sabha speaker's post.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the name of Birla for the post, sources said.

The motion has been backed by all NDA allies, including All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, as well as the YSR Congress Party and the Biju Janata Dal.

Once nominated, Birla—who won from the Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha seat in Rajasthan, will easily become the speaker as the NDA has a clear majority in the Lower House of the Parliament. He will succeed eight-term MP Sumitra Mahajan as Lok Sabha speaker.

The election for the Lok Sabha speaker's post is scheduled for Wednesday.

Tuesday is the last day to file nomination. The Opposition has not yet announced any candidate for the post.

To be sure, long-serving parliamentarians have a greater chance of becoming the Lok Sabha speaker, but there have been instances when first-time and second-time lawmakers were elected to the chair.

Manohar Joshi, who was elected as Lok Sabha speaker in 2002, was then a first-time Member of Parliament. He had succeed GMC Balayogi, a second-time MP who died in a helicopter crash.
