Supreme Court Says Landowners Need EPA Approval on Superfund Cleanups

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that landowners need Environmental Protection Agency clearance before starting environmental cleanup work that goes beyond what regulators have already approved.

Ruling in a case involving a BP unit and an arsenic-contaminated Montana site, the court said landowners are “potentially responsible parties,” a legal designation that requires EPA approval to start remediation work.
