Zimbabwe Teachers Call Strike to Demand a Quadrupling of Their Salary

(Bloomberg) -- Teachers at Zimbabwe's state-run schools plan to stop working from Feb. 5 to demand a quadrupling of their salaries, their union said.

Talks on increasing monthly pay to $1,733 from $414 had deadlocked by the Jan. 25 deadline, the Zimbabwe Teachers Association, or Zimta, said in a statement.

“Zimta will petition parliament to intervene on the root causes of this dispute,” according to the statement.

The Apex Council, the main union representing government employees, will meet state officials on Wednesday to negotiate on new salaries for civil servants.
