The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an update about a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal turning into a depression in the next 24 hours.
“Yesterday's low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast became well marked at 0000 UTC and persisted over the same region at 0300 UTC of today, May 28. It is likely to move slowly northwards and concentrate into a depression over the North Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its latest release on tropical cyclones.

The low-pressure area formed off the Odisha coast over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rain in several parts of West Bengal and Odisha, according to the weather agency.

May 27, 2025Meanwhile, IMD's regional centre in Kolkata has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning.
“Under the influence of the low-pressure area, heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely to occur over some districts of West Bengal this week,” the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, forecast predicted. A heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been issued for the north Bengal region till May 31.

Earlier, the IMD had predicted a low to moderate probability for the development of a depression over the Bay of Bengal from May 28 onwards. Now, with the well-marked low-pressure area likely to become a depression within 24 hours, its future path will be closely watched by the IMD.
Depending on sea temperatures and wind patterns, it may or may not strengthen further into a deep depression and a cyclonic storm. In any case, the region will be heavily lashed with rainfall over the coming days.
Red And Orange Alert For Bengal Districts
The weather agency has issued red, orange and yellow alerts for several districts of West Bengal for the next few days.
Red alert: Alipurduar from 8:00 a.m. on May 30 till next 24 hours.
Orange alert: Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar (May 30 and 31); Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, 24 Parganas, Midnapor, Murshidabad (May 29 and subsequent 24 hours); Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar will also be on an orange alert from the morning of May 29, the IMD said.
Yellow alert: Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly on May 30 and all north Bengal districts on June 1
For May 29, a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts in north Bengal.
IMD Predicts Moderate To Heavy Rainfall For Central, Eastern States Till June 1
Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph likely over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Sikkim, Jharkhand and Odisha during May 28 to 31, according to the IMD bulletin.
Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely over Madhya Pradesh and Bihar from May 28 to 31.
Thunder squall wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph likely over Odisha and Bihar on May 29. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh till May 29.
Between May 28 and 31, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha will experience isolated heavy rainfall. Similar conditions are predicted for Jharkhand till May 30. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will also see isolated heavy rainfall till June 1. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on May 30, according to the IMD.
