Christmas 2024 Bank Holiday: Banks To Remain Shut On Dec. 25 In These States; Full List Here

In addition to Dec. 25, banks will also remain shut on Dec. 26 in Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya on account of Christmas celebrations.

Banks across India will remain closed on Wednesday, Dec. 25, for Christmas celebrations. Due to this planned closure, in-person banking services will remain unavailable at the branches. Customers are advised to schedule their bank visits accordingly to avoid any last-minute confusion.

However, it must be noted that Internet banking and other related services, including UPI and phone banking, will continue to function without any disruptions.

The Reserve Bank of India decides bank holidays in India. A holiday calendar is issued at the start of every year. Here's a list of states where banks will remain closed on December 25, Christmas:

Upcoming Bank Holidays In December

In addition to Dec. 25, banks will also remain shut on Dec. 26 in Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya on account of Christmas celebrations. In Nagaland, banks will remain closed for Christmas celebrations from Dec. 24 to Dec. 27. 

Banks will remain closed on Dec. 30 in Meghalaya on account of U Kiang Nangbah. Banks across Mizoram and Sikkim will remain shut on Dec. 31 for New Year’s Eve/Lossong/Namsoong.

Is December 28 A Bank Holiday?

According to the RBI bank calendar, banks in India remain closed on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month in addition to the planned closure on holidays, unless specified otherwise. Since Dec. 28 is the fourth Saturday of the bank, banks will remain closed. 

This will be followed by closure on Dec. 29 which is a Sunday. 

Bank holidays in India are broadly categorised under  Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays and Banks' Closing of Accounts.

Christmas is celebrated worldwide on December 25 as the day of Jesus Christ's birth, the central figure of Christianity. The celebrations often start on Christmas Eve, with many participating in a midnight mass or church service starting around midnight on December 24th and continuing into the early hours of December 25th.
