The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged Mumbaikars to remain vigilant against false and misleading messages circulating on social media concerning the city's water supply.

In a post on social media, the civic body clarified that recent rumours claiming unfiltered water is being supplied due to a malfunction at the purification plant are entirely baseless and untrue.

"The water supply system is operating normally, with no malfunctions reported," the BMC said in a post on its official handle on X (formerly Twitter).

It also assured residents that "Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ensures a regular supply of clean, disinfected and fully treated water to the citizens of Mumbai."

The clarification follows the spread of misleading messages online, falsely alleging that untreated water is being distributed across the city after a breakdown in the water purification process.

Refuting these claims, the BMC stressed that its water treatment and supply systems are functioning smoothly and without any disruption.

"It has come to the notice that misleading messages are being circulated on social media, falsely claiming that water is being supplied without filtration due to a breakdown in the water purification plant. These claims are entirely false and baseless," the civic body said, urging people not to believe or circulate such information.

The BMC further appealed to citizens to be cautious and responsible while engaging with content on social platforms.

The BMC appeals to all citizens to refrain from believing or spreading such rumours and to exercise caution while forwarding unverified information on social platforms,” the post added.

This isn’t the first time the BMC has had to address such misinformation. In January this year, the civic body had issued a similar clarification, urging Mumbaikars to be wary of false messages circulating on social media about the city’s water supply.

At the time, the BMC had emphasised that its water treatment process strictly follows World Health Organization (WHO) standards, ensuring the water is not only clean but also thoroughly disinfected in line with all necessary health protocols.

With Mumbai’s dependence on civic infrastructure for essential services like safe drinking water, the BMC’s prompt response is aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation and reinforcing public trust in the city’s water supply system.
