Sensex Ends Above 46,000; Nifty Crosses 13,500 Mark

Closing Bell

Indian equity markets continued their record breaking run, registering yet another record high, buoyed by a strong global sentiment.

The S&P BSE Sensex crossed the 46,000 mark in today's session, ending 1.1% higher at 46,103. The 30-stock gauge only took three sessions to scale the 1,000 point milestone between 45,000 to 46,000. The index also gained for the fifth straight day.

The NSE Nifty 50 index too ended above the mark of 13,500 in today's trading session. The index ended 1% higher at 13,529. This was the seventh straight day of gains for the benchmark index.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Bank index gained over 400 points in today's session to end nearly 1.5% higher.

The Nifty Media index was the outperformer in today's session, ending with gains of 3.7%. This was the biggest single-day gain for the stock in a month.

Other gainers in today's session were the Nifty Realty index (up 1.4%), Nifty I.T. index (up 0.9%) and Nifty FMCG index (up 0.8%).

After initial gains, the Nifty PSU Bank index snapped a four-day winning streak to end 1.2% lower.

Broader markets underperformed in today's session but managed to close with gains. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.6% while the Smallcap index closed 0.5% higher. The Midcap index ended higher for the ninth straight day, at the highest level since February 2018.

The India Volatility Index ended 0.8% higher at 18.77.

1,110 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 786 declined.

Indian equity markets have opened higher in today's session, in-line with the positive sentiment across the globe.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.62% higher at 45,891 while the NSE Nifty 50 index has gained 0.5% to open at 13,458. The Sensex has opened higher for the fifth day in a row while the Nifty is up for the seventh straight day.

Among the sectoral indices, the PSU Bank index continues its upward momentum, opening another 2.1% higher, extending Tuesday's 7% advance. The Media index is up 0.9% while the I.T. index, along with the Metal index are up 0.8% at the start of trade.

Broader markets too have opened with gains. The Nifty midcap index is up 0.8% while the Smallacap index is up 0.6% in early trade.

1,241 stocks on the NSE are trading with gains while 306 stocks decline.

A Sedate Start Likely

Indian equities managed to post modest gains during a choppy trade on Tuesday. The Sensex gained for the fourth straight session, while the Nifty 50 for the sixth.

Futures, however, are indicating a steady start to today's trading session. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 0.3% to 13,461 as of 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

Canara Bank remains the only stock in the F&O ban. In terms of F&O positioning, the maximum open interest on call side remains on the 13,500 strike, while that on the put side is at 13,200 strike.

Asian equities are rising in mid-week trade after their U.S. counterparts hit a new record on Tuesday. Shares are higher across the Asia Pacific with South Korean stocks outperforming.

Futures on the Dow Jones are currently trading 65 points higher. The index gained 0.35% on Tuesday. The Nasdaq 100 ended higher for the tenth straight session—its longest winning streak in nearly a year.

West Texas Intermediate crude fluctuated between gains and losses, currently trading at $45.63 per barrel, while gold traded at $1,867/Oz.
