US Market Wrap

US stocks climbed in a quiet, holiday-shortened session after a technical outage at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange briefly disrupted premarket trading. Treasury yields inched higher as bonds slipped.

The S&P 500 added 0.5%, pulling back within reach of its record peak, though activity was light — trading volumes were more than 25% below the 30-day average as markets shut at 1 p.m. The CME issue, traced to a data-center fault, affected several markets and lasted longer than a similar incident in 2019.

Tech outperformed, lifting the Nasdaq 100 by 0.8%. Intel was among the index’s strongest movers, while Amazon rose 1.8% and Walmart hit a record high on one of the year’s busiest US shopping days.

Asian Market Update

Asian shares slipped alongside US equity futures and major cryptocurrencies, reflecting a cautious mood ahead of a heavy week of economic releases — even as bets on a Federal Reserve rate cut in December stayed solid, reports Bloomberg.

A regional stock gauge eased 0.2% in uneven trading, with Japan leading the declines. S&P 500 futures were down 0.5%, reversing Friday’s gains, when the benchmark index climbed by the same margin despite a CME technical outage that hit premarket trade.

Commodity Check

Oil edged higher after OPEC+ confirmed it will maintain its pause on production increases through the first quarter, while markets also assessed the impact of President Donald Trump’s latest comments on Venezuela. Brent hovered near $63 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate traded around $59, according to Bloomberg.

Silver extended its surge to a fresh record, building on nearly 6% gains from the previous session, when a trading outage intensified concerns over tight supply and strengthened expectations of a US rate cut. The metal rose as much as 1.4% to $57.29.
