Sensex, Nifty Gain For Second Day; Nifty Bank Up Another 800 Points

Closing Bell: Banks All The Way...Again

Indian equity markets ended higher for the second straight day with banking stocks leading the charge yet again.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 1.27% higher at 40,261 while the NSE Nifty 50 regained the mark of 11,800, ending 1.2% higher at 11,813.

After a 990 point surge on Monday, the Nifty Bank contributed another 3% or close to 800 points in today's session, taking the two-day tally to nearly 1,800 points.

Auto, Pharma and PSU Banks were the other outperformers in today's session, with the respective sectoral indices ending with gains of over 1.5% each.

The Nifty Realty index was the top laggard in today's session, ending 2.3% lower. Also ending lower was the Nifty Media index, with cuts of 0.4%.

Broader markets gave up most of the day's gains to end mixed. The Nifty Midcap index ended 0.6% higher while the Smallcap index ended little changed.

995 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 831 posted losses.

Opening Bell: A Steady Start

Indian equity markets have opened higher, after a volatile session on Monday, ahead of the U.S. Presidential elections.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 0.6% higher at 39,990 while the NSE Nifty 50 index opened above the mark of 11,700 at 11,734 - up 0.56%.

The Nifty Bank is extending Monday's 990 point surge, opening with gains of 0.9%, while the PSU Bank index too has opened with gains of 0.7%.

The Nifty Media, Metal and Auto indices are also trading with gains of 0.7% at the start of trade. The realty index is the only laggard, opening 0.25% lower.

Broader markets have opened in-line with the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap is up 0.5% while the Smallcap index is up 0.6% after Monday's underperformance.

1,103 stocks on the NSE are trading with gains while 414 have opened with losses.

India’s equities ended with gains on Monday, led by the bank stocks despite an 8.7% decline in heavyweight Reliance Industries Ltd.

Volatility will persist as the U.S. Presidential polls take place later today. Still, futures are pointing to a strong start to the trading day. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, rose 0.8% to 11,768 as of 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

NTPC, Zee Entertainment, Cadila Healthcare, Ramco Cements may react to their results that were reported after market hours on Monday. NTPC’s share buyback announcement will also be in focus.

Adani Ports & SEZ and Sun Pharma are the two Nifty 50 companies set to announce their financials today. Broader market firms that will come out results are Adani Gas, Ajanta Pharma, Dabur, Godrej Properties, JSW Energy, Kansai Nerolac, Muthoot Finance and PVR, among others.

Benchmark indices in Australia, South Korea and Hong Kong rose over 1% in early trade, while markets in Japan are shut on account of a holiday.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading higher by 200 points. The index ended 1.6% higher on Monday.

West Texas Intermediate crude gave up gains to fall 0.4% to $36.65 per barrel, after a 3% rise overnight.
