While Indian equity markets remained volatile on Wednesday, they don't generally see an extreme reaction on the day of the U.S. presidential election and move mostly in tandem with their Wall Street counterparts.

Since 2000, the Indian markets, however, have outperformed their U.S. peers on three occasions in the month after the last five presidential elections in the world's oldest modern democracy, data compiled by BloombergQuint indicates.

The only two instances when the S&P 500 index outperformed the S&P BSE Sensex was in 2008 during the global financial crisis, when the quantum of the fall was lower, and during 2016 when the Indian markets were impacted by demonetisation.
