The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights will issue a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government regarding allegations of child labour on Som Distilleries & Breweries Ltd. The state has not fulfilled its responsibilities properly, the NCPCR Chairperson, Priyank Kanoongo, told NDTV Profit.

The issue will be explored properly and then it will be decided if it can be taken up in court, Kanoongo said.

On Monday, Som Distilleries blamed contractors of its associate company for the child labour issues. The company has terminated the vendor's services, and police has launched an investigation. The associate firm, dealing in country liquor, reportedly failed to verify the ages of its workers properly.

Fifty-eight children, including 20 girls, were rescued from a liquor factory in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district. Shares of Som Distilleries plunged nearly 16% on Tuesday following the police investigation into the company's contractor.

A case under juvenile justice and bonded labour laws was filed on Sunday after the NCPCR discovered over 50 children working in the liquor factory. The NCPCR is coordinating with local authorities to rescue the children and initiate legal proceedings.
