The Telecom Commission has sought clarity on measures suggested by an inter-ministerial group to ease the financial stress of cellular operators, said a top government official.
The commission headed by Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan on Friday sought clarity on the deferred payment liability for spectrum and the change in interest computation structure from prime lending rate to marginal cost of fund-based lending rate, the official said.
Among the other issues taken up by the commission was a contract worth Rs 3,100 crore given to Bharti Group to set up 4,100 towers in the northeast other than Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. The commission is likely to meet again in two weeks once the required details are submitted.
The inter-ministerial group, comprising senior officials from ministries of finance and communications, was formed in last May to “examine systemic issues affecting viability and repayment capacity in the telecom sector and furnish recommendations for resolution of stressed assets”.
The group submitted its report on August 31. Once the commission clears the suggestions, they will be sent to the Union Cabinet for a final approval.
