The wife of Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari accused presidential spokesman Garba Shehu of being disloyal in a strongly worded statement signaling an apparent rift within the president's inner circle.
Shehu is a “willing tool and executioner” for people who don't have the president's best interests at heart, Aisha Buhari said in statement published on her Twitter account that garnered more than 3,200 likes in just a few hours.
“It has become apparent that trust has broken down between my family and Garba Shehu due to the many embarrassments he has caused the presidency and the first family,” the 48-year-old said.
The author of a guide for beauty specialists, Aisha Buhari is known for speaking out against members of government and the ruling All Progressive's Congress. She returned to the West African nation in October after a prolonged stay in the U.K. as rumors circulated online that her 76-year-old husband had married a second wife. In Monday's statement, Aisha Buhari also accused Shehu of failing to keep the record straight, without giving further details.
Shehu declined to comment when contacted by phone.
