Banks are set to remain closed in two states on Jan. 16 as the festive week continues. Thiruvalluvar Day and Kanuma will be observed as public holidays, affecting banking operations in the affected states. 

As a result, banks will not process in-branch transactions on Thursday. Customers are advised to plan their banking needs in advance to avoid any inconvenience. Due to the public holiday, schools, colleges, and government offices will also remain closed in these states.

Bank Holiday On January 16

According to the holiday calendar shared by the Reserve Bank of India, banks will be closed in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Jan. 16. These states will observe Thiruvalluvar Day and Kanuma festivals, leading to a public holiday.

Thiruvalluvar Day honours Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, author of the Thirukkural, celebrated during Pongal in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh will celebrate Kanuma, a harvest festival in the state.

Customers should note that while physical bank branches will remain closed in these states on Jan. 16, digital banking operations will continue as usual. This means that services such as net banking, ATM, UPI, mobile banking will remain available.

The Reserve Bank of India publishes the annual bank holiday schedule at the beginning of each year. Holidays are classified under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RTGS holidays and days earmarked for banks' annual account closure.
