The European Central Bank is looking to hire a climate scientist who will work in a division reporting directly to President Christine Lagarde, underscoring the institution's efforts to pay more attention to the effects of global warming.
The central bank advertised a position this week for someone with a natural-science background to contribute to its work on environmental shifts and sustainable finance. The candidate “will be joining the ECB at a time when key policy choices regarding its approach to climate change are being made,” the listing said.
The move comes after the ECB completed an 18-month strategy review in July that put a spotlight on understanding the implications of climate change for monetary policy. A growing body of research suggests that global warming poses the greatest long-run threat to the world economy, including inflation and financial stability -- the traditional purview of central banks.

Earlier this year, the ECB set up a climate-change center to coordinate work on the topic within its own institution. The climate scientist, who will work within that team, will contribute their science-based knowledge to monetary policy and other areas, stay on top of scientific developments, and contribute to briefings and speeches, the ECB said.
