If the Indian National Congress waits till 2024 to be back in power, it will be difficult to ascertain their strength and future, according to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Future Brands Santosh Desai.
This is an opportune moment for the Rahul Gandhi-led party to challenge Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha polls that are currently underway, he said. “The narrative before Pulwama was being reinforced around the dissatisfaction among people.”
The BJP, according to Desai, will play to their strengths of nationalism and Modi's charisma, and steer clear of its governance record and the demonetisation debacle.
“BJP's larger strategy is that do not pay much attention to my governance record. They will only emphasise a few bits, some bits they will never mention, like demonetisation,” he said.
Rebuttal to the nationalist identity of the BJP will be difficult for the Congress, Desai said. “The Congress can't support the government, and if they do oppose the government, they will come off as anti-national.”
