Atishi, the Aam Aadmi Party leader best known for her contribution to changing education in Delhi, is trying to crowd-fund her election.
The educationist and activist-turned-politician, who will contest from the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat, has launched a crowd-funding exercise to raise up to Rs 70 lakh to finance her campaign. “In India, funding elections is the deepest fault line,” she said, stressing that election funding from “corrupt contractors and crony capitalists” is what leads to corrupt governments.
Atishi is credited with changing Delhi's state-run schools as an adviser to Education Minister Manish Sisodia, also the deputy chief minister of Delhi. She was removed last year after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government claimed her appointment was against the rules. Yet, she has been lauded for lifting the quality of education in the state. And that has given her party a key election issue.
The Aam Aadmi Party will fight a three-cornered battle with the BJP and the Congress for the seven Lok Sabha seats from Delhi. Atishi, however, said it would be a direct contest between her party and the BJP.
