The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has unveiled a Microsoft Excel based template to help tax payers make entries offline before they upload it on to the portal. Information needs to be uploaded once a month.

The GST council aims to make tax compliance easy and convenient and also reduce compliance time to improve ease of doing business, a statement from the Ministry of Finance said.

The excel template can be downloaded from the GST portal, www.gst.gov.in, and can be used to collate all invoice related data on a regular basis, the statement added.

The offline mode is expected to help taxpayers operating in remote areas where internet penetration is low or non-existent. A summary of the sale can be maintained on a weekly basis or any other suitable time interval. The same can then be uploaded on the GST portal on or before the 10th of the following month.

The template, comprising of eight worksheets has the summary of key values provided at the top to help taxpayers accurately prepare the return. Internet connectivity will be required only at the time of uploading the GSTR-1 file on the GST portal.
