New York’s Daily Covid Count Nears 4,000, Worst Since May

New coronavirus cases in New York state are nearing 4,000 a day and the positive testing rate topped 3%, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

The tally was the most positive cases since the start of May, when New York City was a global center of the crisis.

Of the more than 128,000 tests reported on Monday, 3,965 were positive.

There were 1,548 hospitalizations and 32 virus-related deaths Monday, according to state data.

A hot spot in Westchester County had the highest percent of positive tests Monday with 14.66%. The suburban New York City county's overall positivity rate is a daunting 4.4%, representing 242 cases.

There are other hot spots in Brooklyn, Queens, and Orange and Rockland counties, but the pandemic is increasingly evident in western and central New York, as well as the Finger Lakes and counties bordering Pennsylvania.

“While New York's COVID positivity remains the third-lowest in the nation, we continue to see increases in both new positive cases and hospital admissions, demonstrating we are not immune to the surge,” Cuomo said in a Tuesday news release.
