Coronavirus India Updates: India Adds Over 16,000 New Cases; 161 Dead

Active coronavirus cases in India continued to decline at a time when the central and state governments are preparing for an immunisation programme in the country with the world’s second worst outbreak.
India reported 16,311 new cases in a matter of 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data as of 8 a.m. on Jan.11. That’s lower than the 16,959 patients who recovered from the virus in the same time period, taking active cases below 2.22 lakh. India had over 10 lakh live infections in mid-September.
The country is fast approaching the 1-year anniversary of the pandemic reaching its shores. The first Covid-19 case was recorded on Jan. 30, 2020 in Kerala -- a student of the Wuhan University. Since then, authorities have recorded over 1.04 crore confirmed coronavirus cases and over 1 crore recoveries. More than 1.5 lakh people have died due to the virus.
One-day deaths, however, dropped to 161 today -- lowest in over 7 months.

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Sunday said that despite having limited resources, India is in a better position than many developed countries dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Several states on Sunday said they have made all necessary preparations for the first phase of the inoculation exercise, including identification of vaccination sites and registration of healthcare and other frontline workers. The nation-wide roll out is scheduled for Jan. 16.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said her government is making arrangements to provide free Covid vaccines to all the people of the state.

Australia’s Queensland state will lift the three-day lockdown in Brisbane after recording zero new coronavirus cases overnight, keeping in place some restrictions at shops and restaurants as well as public indoor mask requirements. South Korea reported the smallest rise in infections in six weeks. In the U.S., new cases fell for a second day in New York state, easing from a record.
Global confirmed virus cases topped 90 million, while more than 25 million vaccine shots have been administered worldwide.
