Confirmed Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra crossed 10,000 today with most of the cases being in Mumbai city.

Total cases stood at 10,498, according to the state’s Public Health Department. Mumbai and its surrounding regions have over 8,200 cases.

On Thursday, there were 27 Covid-related deaths in the state. Twenty of these were in Mumbai. The state saw 583 new cases and 180 patients being discharged today.

The health ministry has today said that 78 percent of the coronavirus-related deaths that have happened had co-morbid conditions.

The ministry said that more than half of the deaths have been among patients over 60 years of age. Thirty five percent of the deaths have been of people aged between 45-60 while 14 percent deaths have been for those below 45 years of age.

Sixty five percent of the deaths have been males, while 35 percent have been females.

The U.S. government, through its aid agency U.S.AID, has announced an additional grant of $3 million to help India combat the coronavirus pandemic.

On April 6, the U.S.AID had announced a grant of $2.9 million to India to mitigate the spread of the deadly virus.

U.S. Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster said the additional funding will further support India's response to Covid-19.

“This additional funding to support India in its continuing efforts to combat Covid-19 is yet another example of the strong and enduring partnership between the United States and India,” a release issued by the US Embassy here quoted the envoy as saying.

The US Agency for International Development is one of the leading aid agencies globally.

The U.S.AID is providing these funds to the Partnerships for Affordable Healthcare Access and Longevity project, an innovative financing platform, the release said.

To date, U.S.AID has provided $5.9 million to assist India in responding to the Covid-19 outbreak.

This assistance will help India slow the spread of Covid-19, provide care for the affected, disseminate essential public health messages to communities, and strengthen case finding and surveillance, it said.

"Through the PAHAL project, U.S.AID will support the National Health Authority to establish a financing facility that can mobilize resources from the private sector to assist over 20,000 health facilities enrolled under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, India's health insurance scheme for 500 million poor and vulnerable people," the release said.
