(Bloomberg) -- The U.K. has welcomed Zimbabwe's decision to rescind its policy limiting land-lease periods to white farmers to 5 years and include them in 99-year leases that were previously only afforded to black farmers.
“I think the outline of the economic and political reforms that President Emmerson Mnangwgwa has set out to investors will send a very strong signal,” U.K. Minister of State for Africa Harriet Baldwin told reporters in the capital, Harare after meeting Mnangagwa. “The message we're hearing from Zimbabwe is very positive.”
The policy shift comes two months after Robert Mugabe was toppled as president following 37 years in power and replaced by Mnangagwa, his former deputy, who has been on a drive to revive the economy and attract investment. The new administration has also pledged to compensate farmers for improvements that they made to land that was seized.
