Switzerland, Singapore and China are top three destinations for expats, according to a survey. India is ranked at the ninth position, according to the HSBC Expat Explorer survey. The survey was commissioned by HSBC Expat and conducted by YouGov. Over 9,000 expats in more than 100 countries were surveyed.
The survey focuses on the experiences of expats in their new country of residence, with expats describing the opportunities and challenges they face living away from home.
The survey takes into account a range of factors including expat earning levels, expenses, financial savings, raising children abroad and overall quality of life.
Over a third of expats (38 per cent) in the survey said they were spurred to move abroad by the prospect of a better career, while equal proportion saying they relocated to improve their quality of life or to look for a new challenge.
"The days of moving abroad purely for monetary reasons, desirable expat benefits and healthy salaries seem long gone as expats today seek out locations that offer more balanced and well-rounded lifestyles," says Dean Blackburn, Head of HSBC Expat.
Asia remained a popular destination for expats. "Expats there are almost three times more likely to earn over $250,000 per annum than their counterparts in Europe," said Mr Blackburn.
