You Can Watch the Ball Drop in Times Square This Year, If You’re Vaccinated

New York City will open Times Square on New Year's Eve to fully vaccinated revelers.

“We want to welcome all those hundreds of thousands of folks, but everyone needs to be vaccinated,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a briefing Tuesday.

The move is a return to some level of normalcy. Last year, the celebration was limited to front-line workers. Those too young to be get a Covid-19 shot this year must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult, said Tom Harris, president of the Times Square Alliance. Visitors who aren't able to get vaccinated because of a disability will need to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test and must wear a mask if they're able to, Harris said.

“New York City is back,” de Blasio said. “We want to show the world we're back.”
