The survey will also provide data insights relating road furniture and side drains.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) announced the mandatory use of the 'Network Survey Vehicle' (NSV) in order to maintain and enhance the quality of national highways. According to a recent statement released by the Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways, the national survey vehicle will be deployed to carry out the road condition survey. The statement added that the survey using NSV on national highways is now compulsory at the time of the certifying completion of the project and every six months thereafter.

What is National Survey Vehicle (NSV)? : All You Need To Know

  • The national survey vehicle utilises the latest survey techniques such as record images or videos at regular intervals, a high-resolution digital camera for 3600 imagery, laser road profilometer, and other such related technology for tracking distresses on road surfaces
  • The deployment of the national survey vehicle will contribute to the sustenance and also to ensure the overall quality of highways/roads.
  • The provision of the survey technique has also been included as a part of the standard bidding document of consultancy services.
  • National survey vehicle will help collate data in order to analyse the condition of roads including the measurement of road surface, potholes, surface cracking, as well as patches. The survey will also provide data insights relating road furniture and side drains.

The ministry added that the data which will be collected through the national survey vehicle will be uploaded on the National Highway Authority of India's 'A1' based portal data lake. The data will then be analysed by the road asset management cell, in order to assess the roughness of roads and determine the condition, to prioritise for further maintenance.

The data from the national survey vehicle will provide the maintenance of up-to-date asset inventory and status of road assets condition. The survey will deliver critical information on deficiencies in certain roads, road network planning, development of road safety measures, etc.
