(Bloomberg) -- LG Chem Ltd.'s India unit has apologized for a gas leak this week at its polymer plant that killed at least 11 people and forced the evacuation of thousands in the southern city of Visakhapatnam.
Initial investigations signal that the incident was caused by a leaking vapor from a storage tank near the General Purpose Poly Styrene factory on May 7, LG Polymers India Pvt.said in a press release Saturday. The company has set up a special task force to help victims resolve any issues and provide assistance to the bereaved families.

The polymer maker is also working closely with the Indian authorities to assess the damage and deliver a relief package that can be implemented immediately, according to the statement.
The incident took place after the company tried to restart operations following the partial easing of the country's coronavirus lockdown, leaving more than 20 people in critical condition and hospitalizing about 400 people because of breathlessness and eye irritations.
