L&T Construction's Smart World & Communication Business arm has inked a contract with the Maharashtra Government which will transform Nagpur into the country's "first large scale integrated smart city", according to the company's exchange filing on the BSE.

The contract with the Department of Information & Technology involves creating 136 wi-fi hotspots at key locations through out the city. It will also establish 100 digital interactive kiosks and city surveillance systems with 3,800 internet protocol based cameras.

A six kilometre strip will also be developed as a ‘smart strip' with smart lighting, transport, parking and also smarter garbage disposal systems.

The construction major has not disclosed any financial details though.

L&T Construction claims to have completed detailed surveys and procured the needed approvals for the project.

We are proud for having bagged this prestigious order which is a significant step forward towards achieving the smart city mission. We have initiated activities on the ground post the award of the letter of intent on August 15 and have already covered a fair bit of ground to transform Nagpur.
SN Subrahmanyan, Deputy Managing Director & President, Larsen & Toubro.

Nagpur is one of the 60 smart city projects under planning by the Government of India.
