Industrial Safety Department has issued closure notice to Jindal Poly Films Ltd., after its plant in Maharashtra's Nashik had a fire incident, NDTV Marathi reported citing sources.

A major fire broke out at Jindal Poly Films' plant at Nashik on May 21. The smoke had been continuously rising from the plant for the last six days, as per NDTV Marathi.

The notice has been issued due to inadequate fire extinguishing system in the company and chemical leakage posing a threat to the environment.

The government took serious note as this was the second major fire incident in two and a half years. The cause of the fire is still unclear and it will take at least three weeks to complete the investigation.

Since it is a crude petroleum product, when water is added, oxygen and hydrogen are produced, which further inflames the fire, so the fire brigade has to use foam to control the fire.

"The production operation at part of the said plant is disturbed temporarily," the company said in an exchange filing on May 23.

The cause of fire will be assessed in due course by the subsidiary entity, Jindal Poly said, adding that the firm is also in the process of ascertaining the actual loss caused by the accident.

Three employees were injured in the incident and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to an NDTV report. Local authorities said goods worth crores of rupees may have been damaged, but a full assessment is pending.

On Jan. 1, 2023, a major fire incident had occurred at the same plant, claiming three lives.
