The Haryana government has granted Maruti Suzuki permission to restart production at its Manesar plant, but the carmaker said it would do so only when it can maintain continuous production and sell vehicles, "which is not possible at this point of time".

The Gurugram district administration has allowed Maruti Suzuki to run the facility on single-shift basis with a maximum of 4,696 employees. “Permission is hereby granted to Maruti Suzuki India, Manesar, to operate the establishment during the lockdown period," Gurugram Deputy Commissioner said in an order dated Tuesday.

The district administration also gave permission to operate 50 vehicles.

"No other manufacturing/service activity is permitted in the unit other than those approved under the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs during said lockdown period, else strict action will be taken and you will be responsible for the same," the order stated.

When contacted over the matter, Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava said, "We will start operations whenever we can maintain continuous production and sell (vehicles), which is not possible at this point of time."

On Wednesday, Maruti Suzuki shares rose 3.34 percent to Rs 5,168.00 apiece on the National Stock Exchange while the benchmark Nifty 50 gained 2.29 percent to end the day at 9,187.30 points.
