The country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki Ltd. cut prices for most of its vehicles, within hours of the Goods and Services Tax being rolled out. All petrol and diesel cars have gotten cheaper by up to 3 percent at the showroom.
“The rate of reduction varies across locations depending on the Value Added Tax rates applicable prior to GST,” said a statement issued by the company.
But hybrid versions will cost more now due to the withdrawal of tax concessions, said the Maruti statement.
Monthly Sales
The carmaker sold 1,06,394 units last month, in India and abroad, a rise of 7.6 percent, year-on-year. Maruti had sold more vehicles in May this year. Exports went up by 95.6 percent, year-on-year. The carmaker recorded a 13 percent rise in quarterly sales, in this financial year.
Popular models like the Alto and WagonR, in the ‘Mini' segment recorded a fall in sales. Utility vehicles segment saw sales rise by 43 percent, versus the same month last year, mainly led by the S-Cross and Vitara Brezza.
The company's maiden entry in segment, light commercial vehicles, ‘Super Carry', recorded a sale of 206 units since its launch in July 2016.
