India has approved 17 new applications under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) with investment commitments totalling Rs 7,172 crore, marking a major expansion of the country’s scheme to localise critical components and strengthen its electronics supply chain.

The approvals were confirmed by IT Secretary S Krishnan, who noted strong support from state governments for accelerating the scheme’s rollout.

The newly approved projects span Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Goa domestically.

Under the scheme, the government is targeting the development of 30 system-on-chip (SoC) chipsets, which are expected to meet a large share of India’s domestic requirements, while also positioning the country as a competitive export hub. ECMS projects already in the pipeline aim to meet 50–60% of India’s demand for essential components such as PCBs, camera modules, and passive components, reducing the country’s heavy reliance on imports.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also shared that a major global laptop manufacturer has indicated it will shift 30% of its worldwide production to India, reflecting growing confidence in India’s maturing components ecosystem.

These 17 approvals follow seven earlier ECMS project approvals. Krishnan added that the Centre may consider supporting additional device categories as India’s manufacturing landscape evolves and demand patterns diversify.
