Budget 2025: Jal Jeevan Mission Gets Extension Till FY28, Rs 67,000 Crore To Be Allocated In FY26

Under the mission, every rural household will have drinking water supply in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on a regular and long-term basis at affordable service delivery charges.

The Jal Jeevan Mission will be extended with enhanced outlay till 2028, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her budget speech on Saturday.

The government has allocated Rs 67,000 crore for fiscal 2026, compared to a revised outlay of Rs 22,694 for fiscal 2025. The budget estimate for the mission was at Rs 70,163 crore for FY25.

Under the mission, every rural household will have drinking water supply in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on a regular and long-term basis at affordable service delivery charges, leading to improvement in living standards of rural communities.

Jal Jeevan Mission assists and facilitates—

  • States in planning of participatory rural water supply strategy for ensuring potable drinking water security on a long-term basis to every rural household and public institution.

  • States for the creation of water supply infrastructure, so that every rural household has a functional tap connection and water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality is made available on a regular basis.

  • States to plan for their drinking water security.

  • GPs/rural communities to plan, implement, manage, own, operate and maintain their own in-village water supply systems.

  • In making provision and mobilisation of financial assistance to states/UTs for implementation of the mission.
