Elon Musk's Tesla Inc. has finally made its debut in India, opening its first showroom in Mumbai. The 4,000-square-foot space is located in Mumbai's upscale financial district of Bandra Kurla Complex, inside the Maker Maxity Mall.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Tesla's first showroom in the country. "Tesla has arrived in the right city—as both Mumbai and Tesla stand for innovation and sustainability," said Fadnavis.
The electric vehicle maker has marked its India debut with its top-selling SUV, the Model Y priced at Rs 61 lakh (Mumbai on-road price), according to the price catalogue on Tesla's website. The car is available in six colours—stealth grey, pearl white, diamond black, glacier blue, quick silver, and ultra red. Customers should note that the price may vary depending on the colour.
Tesla is expected to begin deliveries in India from the third quarter. Deliveries for the 500-km range variant will start in third quarter, while the 622-km range variant will begin in the fourth quarter. The first deliveries will be rolled out in Delhi, Mumbai, and Gurgaon.
As a limited-time offer, Tesla will provide a free wall connector with every purchase of a new Tesla vehicle.
Additionally, Tesla will launch both its Supercharger and wall connector in India, confirmed Tesla APAC chief Isabel Fan.
The Supercharger can provide up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes and boasts a 99.95% uptime—the highest in the industry. Meanwhile, the wall connector can offer up to 70 km of range in one hour.
In India, Tesla is expected to compete primarily with German luxury carmakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz Group AG, rather than with mass-market players like Tata Motors Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., and MG Motor India Pvt.
