Stock Market Today: Nifty Holds 24,500 Levels Even As Bears Charge Amid Tariff Jitters, Sensex Down 700 Points

The NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex extended losses as sentiment got roiled after US proceeded with its plan and imposed 50% tariff with effect from Aug 27. HDFC Bank Ltd. and ICICI Bank Ltd. were biggest laggard. The NSE Nifty IT emerged as the biggest losing sector as Infosys Ltd., Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., and HCLTech Ltd. weighed. The Nifty 50 breached first support level of 24,600 shortly after open and ended just near the next support level of 24,500.

India To Become Second-Largest Economy By 2038, Says EY Report Even As 50% US Tariffs Hit

India's economy may emerge as the second-largest by 2038 with $34.2 trillion GDP and could reach $20.7 trillion in terms of purchasing power parity by 2030, an EY report said on Wednesday.

"If beyond 2030, India and the US maintain average growth rates of 6.5% and 2.1%, respectively, during 2028-2030 (as per IMF forecasts), India may surpass the US economy in PPP terms by 2038," the report said.

The domestic stock market is trading in a volatile range on Thursday, a day after the Trump tariff on India came into effect. Multiple stocks are seeing high trading activity and volatility in their price as well as volume.

The fluctuations in the stocks is largely led by US President Donald Trump raising tariffs on Indian goods by an additional 25% levy, which has brought the total kitty to a staggering 50%. These tariffs are set to severely impact garments, footwear, gems and jewellery, sporting goods, furniture, and the chemical industries.

The Nifty fell over 200 points from the day’s high to end at its lowest level in the past seven sessions.
