United States President Donald Trump on Thursday launched a scathing personal attack on New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, calling him a "100% communist lunatic", after he secured the democratic nomination.

"It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Democratic Primary, and is on his way to becoming mayor," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

He further claimed that Mamdani looks "terrible" and that his "voice is grating, he’s not very smart." He also slammed Democratic Party leaders Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Chuck Schumer for backing Mamdani.

“He’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" Trump’s post read.

Having won Democratic primary on Tuesday night, Mamdani will now face Republican and independent candidates in the November elections. If he wins the election, he could become New York’s first Indian American Muslim mayor.

Born in Uganda with his family’s roots in Gujarat, Mamdani, 33, became a US citizen in 2018. During the Democratic primary, he secured a notable victory over former governor Andrew Cuomo, whose reputation has been mired in a sexual harassment scandal. Mamdani’s campaign has particularly resonated with young voters in New York.

He moved to New York at the age of seven and has a college degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College, Maine.

Before entering politics, he worked as a housing counsellor, helping low-income families avoid eviction. In 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly from the 36th district, representing Astoria, Queens.

His grassroots campaign has focused on working-class areas in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Mamdani’s critics say that he lacks the administrative experience needed to handle city bureaucracy.
