Annual spring festival of Holi 2025 is set to be celebrated on Mar. 14, coinciding with a lunar eclipse this year. According to the Panchang, this year, Holika Dahan will be observed on Mar. 13, eight days after the conclusion of 'Holashtak' - a period in Hindu religion when all auspicious activities are paused.

This year, Holashtak started on Mar. 7 and will conclude with Holika Dahan on Mar. 13. Subsequently, Holi will be observed a day later.

Holika Dahan is observed every year in the evening on Purnima Tithi of the Phalgun month, as per the Hindu calendar.

Why Is Holi Celebrated?

Holi, the festival of colours, is an annual Hindu spring festival, which typically falls in the month of March. According to Hindu mythology, the festival has its roots in the legend of Holika - the sister of the demon king, Hiranyakashipu. The origin of Holi is linked to the celebration of the victory of truth and devotion over evil. As per Hindu mythology, Hiranyakashipu conspired with his sister Holika to kill his son Prahlad, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu.

As Holika was immune to fire, she tried to kill Prahlad by placing him on her lap while sitting on a pyre. However, Prahlad came out of the fire unharmed due to blessings of Lord Vishnu, while Holika was burnt to ashes despite having he boon of immunity from fire. The story of Prahlad symbolises the victory of good over evil.

On the evening of Phalgun Purnima, a bonfire is lit to celebrate the burning of demon Holika. It marks the celebration of the victory of truth over darkness and getting rid of all evil forces in one's life.

The colourful celebration of the Holi festival also marks the divine bonding between goddess Radha and Lord Krishna.
