A recent upgrade to YouTube has been silently released, ending compatibility for some outdated Apple devices, including iPhones and iPads. The YouTube app now requires iOS 16 or later to work with the most recent version (20.22.1), which prevents access for Apple devices that are limited to iOS 15.

Users can still access YouTube using the mobile browser by going to m.youtube.com, even if the YouTube app will not work on incompatible devices. Users will not be able to access many of YouTube's features, including improved video streaming capabilities, seamless navigation, and offline compatibility.

YouTube Won't Work On These iPhones, Other Apple Devices

So which are the Apple iPhones that YouTube won't be compatible with because it requires iOS 16.0 or later. Here's the complete list:

  • iPhone 6s.

  • iPhone 6s Plus.

  • iPhone 7.

  • iPhone 7 Plus.

  • First-generation iPhone SE.

On the iPad, YouTube will require iPad 16.0 or later, which means it will not be accessible on the following iPads:

  • iPad Air 2.

  • iPad mini 4.

Also, users will also not be able to watch YouTube on the iPod Touch 7.

Why Is YouTube Not Supporting Older Apple Devices?

YouTube made these updates in the version 20.22.1, which was made available on June 2. On the App Store, YouTube claims that this update has "bug fixes and performance improvements".

On its support page, YouTube also says that to protect user information, it updates its security standards on a regular basis. In other words, the app disables the services on devices that are unable to meet those standards.

The news comes on the heels of WhatsApp also dropping support for a number of older iPhone models from June 1. WhatsApp's minimum iOS requirement is now version 15.1, which makes the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus incompatible with the messaging app.
