Apple's long-rumoured entry into the foldable smartphone market could happen earlier than expected. The foldable iPhone, named Ultra, could be unveiled in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

According to a Chinese tipster, Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn has begun trial production of the device. If the testing phase goes smoothly, Apple is expected to start mass production around July 2026 and could then be unveiled in September 2026.

Apple has used a similar release strategy before. The iPhone X was unveiled alongside the iPhone 8 lineup but reached consumers weeks later. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to arrive in early 2027, along with the iPhone 18e and a next-generation iPhone Air.

The iPhone Fold could be different from any iPhone Apple has made so far and might be one of its biggest design changes ever.

The iPhone Fold may not use Face ID like current iPhones. Instead, Apple could bring back Touch ID but placed on the power button. Also, instead of the Dynamic Island, the phone may have small punch-hole cameras on both screens.

It is expected to have a book-style fold. Inside, you may get a large 7.8-inch OLED screen, which will feel more like a small tablet. This screen is expected to have only a slight crease. On the outside, there could be a 5.5-inch screen for regular use without opening the phone.

Built on a 2nm process, the phone is expected to run on a new chip called A20 Pro.

Compared to foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 or Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Apple's version may be wider, giving more screen space when opened.

The phone may use a LiquidMetal hinge, which is stronger and more durable than regular materials. This would be a first for iPhones. It could also come with a titanium frame and the back may feature ceramic shield or glass, similar to current premium iPhones.
