After integrating Gemini AI into smartphones and laptops, Google is bringing its generative artificial intelligence model to select TVs. At CES 2025, the tech giant previewed a suite of new AI features for Google TV using the Gemini models.
The company demonstrated its updated Google TV software, which includes enhanced YouTube integration, better content search, and more natural voice commands. The new AI capabilities for Google TV aim to help make user interaction more intuitive and helpful.
“At this year’s CES, we shared a preview of new AI capabilities for Google TV that use our Gemini models to make interacting with your TV more intuitive and helpful. You and your family will be able to gather together and have a natural conversation with your TV,” Google said.
After introducing some of Gemini AI capabilities on its first-party streaming box last year, Google is integrating the agent with third-party TV sets using its operating system for the first time. This will reportedly include devices made by Sony, Hisense, and TCL. The Gemini update, which is scheduled to be released later this year, will enable users to have more natural conversations with third-party TVs without having to say the “Hey Google” trigger word for every command.
According to the company, this will enable search of media easier, and users will be able to ask queries about health, travel, space, history, and other topics, with videos provided in the results for better context. The company demonstrated how content might be requested more naturally, for example, by requesting movies from recent travels stored in a user’s Google Photos account.
Other features of Google TV's Gemini AI model include the ability to make personalised artwork with the family, manage smart home appliances while the TV is in ambient mode, and even see the day’s news summary. Select Google TV devices will start to get these functions later this year, according to the company.
Additionally, Google provided a look at an “always-on” mode for a line of TVs that utilise sensors to detect when a user is nearby and display potentially helpful information. When a person is near their TV, the system may display news, weather updates, and other useful content. According to reports, TCL will be the first company to offer this functionality, in late 2025, with Hisense to follow in 2026.
