Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are set to face off in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 fixture at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, May 21. The weather forecast, however, indicates that the rain gods may play spoilsport. There is also a chance of a washout.

It must be noted that the India Meteorological Department, on Tuesday, issued a yellow alert for Mumbai.

What Happens If The Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals Game Is Washed Out?

If the fixture is washed out, MI and DC will share a point each. Mumbai currently occupy the fourth spot in the IPL table with 14 points, while Delhi are in the fifth position with 13. After a washout, the teams will have 15 and 14 points, respectively.

To qualify, Delhi will need to ensure that they win their final fixture against the Punjab Kings on May 24. But this will not be enough. For the Delhi-based outfit to qualify to make it to the playoffs, Mumbai will have to lose their next game, which is also against the Punjab Kings.

The chances of the Mumbai Indians making it to the playoffs increase if the points are shared in their match against Delhi.

A victory over Punjab in their next match will seal MI’s qualification bid. If they lose to the Shreyas Iyer-led squad, Mumbai can still qualify for the playoffs if Delhi Capitals also endure a defeat against PBKS.

New Rule For IPL 2025 Amid Rain Worries

Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal has written to the BCCI to shift the MI vs. DC fixture to a different city as the "virtual quarter-final is also expected to be washed out."

"The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out," Jindal wrote in the mail, as per ESPN Cricinfo.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allotted an extra 120 minutes to the remaining IPL games to increase the chances of having a full fixture, even with rain interruptions. But with heavy rainfall predicted, it is unclear if the match can take place.

IPL 2025 Playoffs

Three teams have made their way to the tournament's next stage - Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. The IPL 2025 playoffs are scheduled to take place from May 29 in Chandigarh. Qualifier 1 will be held on May 29, and the Eliminator on May 30.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host Qualifier 2 (on June 1) and the IPL 2025 Final (on June 3).
