Mumbai will get new non-AC train coaches by November 2025, as per latest reports on Monday, after four passengers died and six were injured when they fell from a moving overcrowded local train in Thane district.

"In the wake of the sad incident today in Mumbai, the Railway Minister and Railway Board officials had a detailed meeting with the Integral Coach Factory team," as per an ANI report.

After detailed discussions, it was decided that new non AC trains will be designed and manufactured where the key issue of ventilation will be resolved using three design changes.

  • First, the doors will have louvres.

  • Second, coaches will have roof mounted ventilation units to pump in fresh air.

  • Third, the coaches will have vestibules so that passengers can move from one coach to another and balance out the crowd in a natural way.

The first train of this new design will be ready by November 2025. After necessary tests and certification, it will be put into service by January 2026.

Four people have lost their lives after falling from a fast local train in Mumbai. Thane District Administration told NDTV that around 13 people fell off from a local train. Out of the 13 individuals, four deaths have been confirmed, two have been reported to be critically injured and have been shifted to a private hospital called Jupiter Hospital, and seven are out of danger and under treatment at Kalwa Hospital.
