The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai and nearby districts for Wednesday, Mar. 12, warning people to avoid stepping out in the Sun during peak hours.
As many as six coastal districts of Maharashtra are on a yellow alert for today in view of the unprecedented hot and humid conditions. The weather agency warned that four districts of Thane, Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri, will be prone to heatwave today, particularly during peak sunny hours.
“Hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail at isolated places in Konkan districts. Heat waves are likely to occur at isolated places in Konkan districts,” the IMD regional sub division in Mumbai, said. Today, north Konkan and south Konkan-Goa will likely experience maximum temperatures of between 35-39°C, which is marked ‘above normal' for these regions at this time of the year, the IMD said.

March 12, 2025Sindhudurg and Palghar are also expected to experience hot and humid conditions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for these districts too, while there is no warning on heatwave.
According to the weather forecaster, Mumbai, Thane and these other four districts will experience dry weather conditions from Mar. 13-16. Additionally, all other districts in Maharashtra are ‘very likely' expected to experience dry weather till Sunday, the IMD forecasted.
Mumbai Weather During Holi 2025
According to the IMD's prediction, Mumbai and nearby districts of Maharashtra are ‘very' likely to experience dry weather conditions on the day of Holi festival on Mar. 14. There is no significant heatwave prediction for these districts and they remain under ‘green' alert, which signals ‘no' threat.
While the majority of Maharashtra districts will likely only experience ‘dry' conditions on Holi, the IMD has put Akola district on a ‘yellow' alert, warning of a potential heatwave situation. Akola is likely to feel heatwave conditions on Mar. 15 as well. Additionally, Chandrapur district will also experience similar weather on Mar. 15, the IMD predicted.
Heatwave conditions have been affecting Mumbai since late February, raising concerns about an unprecedented shift in climate patterns. Defined as a period of unexpected abnormally high temperatures, prolonged or frequent heatwave conditions can contribute to additional problems such as water scarcity.
