The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average edged higher on Tuesday ahead of the release of US jobs data.

The S&P 500, which is the broader index, rose over 0.39%, whereas the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite and Dow rose 0.26% and 0.38%, respectively.

Nvidia Corp. was among the early gainers, as the chipmaker's stock rose by 1.5% in the first few minutes of trading. Walt Disney Co. climbed 2.3%, whereas other key gainers included Boeing Co, Nike Inc and Coca-Cola Co.

On the other hand, Amazon.com Inc., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Salesforce were among the early losers after they saw a rally on Monday.

Notably, the markets will be closed on Thursday to mourn the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

The markets on Monday closed higher, propelled by a surge in chip stocks after Foxconn reported its fourth quarter earnings. With Tuesday's advance, the stocks are poised to continue their winning streak after a weak December.

In the early minutes of trading, six of the 11 sectoral indices was trading in green. Healthcare and material sectors were leading the surge while information technology and consumer discretionary sectors were among the drags.

As the US market opened, spot gold was up 0.97% to $2,662.09 an ounce. Crude oil prices also rose, with Brent trading 0.88% higher at $76.97 per barrel.

The Bloomberg Dollar Index was little changed, with the British Pound rising 0.2% to $1.254, while the Japanese yen was nearly flat at 157.71 per dollar.

Bitcoin, the largest traded cryptocurrency, fell 0.9% to $100,741.47.
