Jangpura Election Results: AAP's Manish Sisodia Loses To BJP's Tarvinder Singh Marwah

Jangpura Election Results: Manish Sisodia had won from the Patparganj constituency in 2013, 2015 and 2020. In this election, he moved to Jangpura, which was seen as a safe seat for the AAP.

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia has lost from the Jangpura constituency, which was seen as an AAP stronghold over the past decade. The Bharatiya Janata Party's Tarvinder Singh Marwah has wrested the seat.

Data released by the Election Commission showed Sisodia bagged a total of 38,184 votes, 675 less as compared to 38,859 votes polled by Marwah, the winning candidate.

Sisodia, while speaking to the press outside the counting centre, conceded defeat and congratulated the winning candidate.

"Party workers fought well; we all worked hard. People supported us, too. But, we fell short by 600 votes. I congratulate the candidate who won. I hope he works for the constituency," he said.

Farhad Suri of the Congress, a distant third in the electoral race, secured only 7,350 votes.

Notably, Sisodia had so far represented the Patparganj seat in the Delhi assembly. He had won the constituency in 2013, 2015 and 2020, but was shifted to Jangpura in this year's elections.

Jangpura was seen as a safe constituency for the AAP. It was wrested by the party from the Congress in 2013. The constituency was retained by the party's Praveen Kumar in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections.

The assembly elections in Delhi came in the backdrop of the federal agencies' probe against senior AAP leaders in the alleged liquor scam case. Sisodia, who is one of the accused, was jailed for 17 months before being granted bail in August 2024.

Delhi witnessed a saffron sweep as the BJP secured a two-third majority win in this assembly elections. The party bagged 48 out of the 70 assembly constituencies of the national capital, whereas the AAP's tally slipped to 22. The Congress has again failed to open its account.

In the last assembly elections, the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP had secured a landslide mandate of 62 seats, whereas the BJP had managed to win only eight constituencies. The Congress had drawn a blank.
