Coronavirus India Updates: Total Caseload Exceeds 85 Lakh, Death Toll Tops 1.26 Lakh

Around 150 people here have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past week during a random checking drive, officials said on Sunday.

The cases include traders, auto drivers and people working in various workshops and beauty parlours, among others, they said.

"The health department along with the district administration is conducting random checks. In the past one week, as many as 9,000 persons were tested in the rural areas, while 1,800 persons were tested in the urban areas. Of these 42 persons in rural areas and 108 persons in urban areas tested positive for Covid-19," Additional District Magistrate (City) Mahendra Kumar Singh said.

Keeping with the trend of single-day Covid-19 recoveries outnumbering daily new cases, 49,082 patients have recuperated from the disease in a day, taking the total recoveries to 78.68 lakh which exceed the active infections by 73,56,303, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

The trend of single-day Covid-19 recoveries exceeding daily new cases has been observed for the 37th day on Sunday.

"This has played a pivotal role in pushing down the active cases which is 5,12,665 and comprise 6.03% of the total caseload," the ministry said.

• Seventy six percent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 states and union territories.

• Kerala displaced Maharashtra to have the maximum number of single-day recoveries. A total of 7,120 people recovered in Kerala during the span of 24 hours followed by 6,478 in Maharashtra.

• Kerala reported 7,201 cases in the last 24 hours, followed closely by Delhi with 6,953 cases. Maharashtra has come a distant third with 3,959 new cases yesterday.

• A total of 559 case fatalities have been reported in a span of 24 hours. Of these, 10 states and union territories account for nearly 79%. More than 26.8 % of new fatalities reported are from Maharashtra (150 deaths). Delhi and West Bengal follow with 79 and 58 new deaths, respectively.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Sunday said the national capital has hit the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 and the number of cases suggests it has been the worst so far.

The government has increased the number of beds for Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Delhi, but there is no plan to rope in hotels and banquet halls, the minister said.

"The third wave of Covid-19 is at its peak in Delhi. The number of cases suggests it is the worst wave so far. But the cases will come down soon," Jain said. The minister attributed the increase in the number of cases to aggressive testing and contact-tracing.

He, however, said laxity on the part of the people has been a major reason behind the spike in new cases. "Some people think nothing will happen to them if they don't wear a mask. They are wrong. Mask is the only medicine for Covid-19 till a vaccine is developed," Jain said.

The Mizoram government has extended 'Covid-19 no tolerance drive' for another three weeks till Nov. 30 to curtail the rising coronavirus cases.

The no tolerance drive initially scheduled to be lifted on Nov. 10 was started from Oct. 26. According to the order issued on Saturday, the inter- state border will continue to open for vehicles carrying commodities and passengers.

The inter-state border is currently opened at four entry points — Vairengte and Bairabi (with Assam) Kanhmun (with Tripura) and Khawkawn (with Manipur). Lengpui airport will also remain open and the schedule of flight operation will be arranged by the civil aviation wing of the state General Administration Department in consultation with operating airlines, the order said.

All educational institutions, training institutes, religious places, cinema halls, auditorium, community halls, picnic spots and swimming pools will continue to be closed, it said.

Assembly of more than five people is prohibited in public places.

Night curfew has been clamped in all district headquarters, including state capital Aizawl from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. All shops will be allowed to open. However, shops in market areas and shopping malls or complexes within Aizawl municipal area will open on alternate days, the order said.
